Hong Kee Claypot Chicken Rice
About This Spot
Hong Kee Claypot Chicken Rice sits humbly beside the busy flow of Jalan Sultan, a vibrant artery in Kuala Lumpur’s City Centre where the pace moves just a little slower, inviting you to pause and savor something truly comforting. Stepping up to this unpretentious spot, you’re met with the warm bustle of a casual local eatery that feels more like a communal kitchen than a restaurant. The scent of smoky rice sizzling in claypots curls through the air, mingling with the chatter of nearby diners and the occasional clatter of woks.
The atmosphere here is alive yet grounded—it’s not a place to rush but a place where time unfolds naturally around simple, earnest food. As the claypots bubble and char gently over the flames, there’s a tangible rhythm to the preparation, a sort of culinary choreography that plays out in full view of those seated nearby. Watching your meal take shape—the slow caramelization of the chicken, the delicate mingling of flavors from salted fish and sambal spices—becomes part of the ritual, a moment of shared connection with the craft behind the plate.
Dining at Hong Kee is less about sophistication and more about authenticity. The food embraces you with layers of subtle smoky warmth, where rice carries a charred kiss at its base and the seafood arrives fresh and vibrant on the grill. It’s a meal that invites you to slow down, to savor textures that alternate between tender, crunchy, and silky, and to notice the little touches—a side of greens, perhaps, or the gentle sweetness of a homemade soup served alongside. The drinks, simple and refreshing, offer a crisp contrast to the deep, layered flavors on the table.
At its heart, this eatery thrives on straightforward, heartfelt cooking and shared moments around it. Whether you’re seated inside or along the street where the night air mingles with the food’s aroma, there’s a welcoming rawness to the experience—unpolished in the best way—that reminds you that great food often roots itself firmly in place, tradition, and quiet, everyday rhythms. It’s a spot where locals and visitors alike find themselves drawn into a delicious moment of discovery, just steps away from the city’s more hurried paths.

Finally had the chance to dine here. Roadside stall of claypot chicken. Taste wise is pretty decent and comparable to branded place. Tasty claypot with lots of charred at the bottom. Able to pair with simple greens of baked fish. We had a small sized sambal fish to taste.

One of the best claypot rice in the heart of KL! The flavour, texture and that smoky taste are sooo good. Also tried their Portuguese grill fish - super tasty and worth a try. Prices are pretty decent too. If you’re around Petaling Street hunting for good food, this spot is a must-try!

We stopped by Hon Kee Claypot Chicken Rice for dinner on our first evening in Kuala Lumpur, together with a local friend who knows the city well. It’s conveniently located just across from the Park Hyatt Merdeka, making it an easy first stop for a casual, authentic meal. We were seated quickly despite the evening rush, and the service was friendly and efficient throughout. We ordered the Claypot Chicken Rice and the Grilled Stingray, and both were excellent - packed with flavor, freshly cooked, and served sizzling hot. The claypot rice had that perfect mix of tender chicken and crispy rice at the bottom, while the stingray was juicy, aromatic, and grilled to perfection. It’s a simple, no-frills local spot that focuses on great food done right. Even our local friend, who knows the city’s food scene inside out, really enjoyed it. Definitely worth a visit if you’re staying nearby or want to experience an authentic Kuala Lumpur classic.

Just absolutely brilliant food, like a biryanis but much better. Crispy spicy delight with an egg on top wow, cooked for all to see, fantastic. Had clams and a prawn dish just so fresh and once I stirred the clay pot the rice with crunch and soft texture was divine. 10/10.

Food is excellent! A must try when visiting KL. Try the chicken claypot and the grilled fish. You may be seated outside, and they may have long queue sometimes, depending on day and events. Not sure but auntie who is like the boss is a little annoying. We were trying to ask for additional spicy sauce or flakes. But she declined and talked to there guy at there language (not sure what they are talking sbout) but it seems they are making fun of our request because the fish sauce is already a little spicy, we just wanted more spice. But it seems they made fun of our request. (But again not sure what they are talking about, i can only be sure that she declined and said no no no). KL is humid and hot most of the times, so if you are not the person who is comfortable eating outside (humid with street noise, people walking, cars around) this might be uncomfortable for you. Just be ready when you dine here coz experience is not the usual dining experience. Lots of options around who offers almost same menu so you may wsnna try others too if you want. This is our exp, you may have diff exp. Just sharing and being honest
